[lang_es]En el año 2000, se creó el Centro de Investigación en Resonancia Magnética, con la participación de los departamentos de Ingeniería Eléctrica y Radiología de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Los fondos para su creación, provinieron de la universidad, las escuelas de ingeniería y medicina, el gobierno chileno (a través de FONDEF) y Philips Medical Systems. Tal como lo indicaba su nombre original, el Centro estaba focalizado en resonancia magnética;sin embargo, con el tiempo, se fue viendo la conveniencia de incorporar otras modalidades de imágenes biomédicas, tales como rayos X, medicina nuclear, microscopía óptica y otras. Adicionalmente, a lo largo de estos años, también hemos explorado otras áreas, como el análisis y la percepción de imágenes médicas y, al mismo tiempo, investigadores y profesionales de otras disciplinas (Ciencia de la Computación y Mecánica, en Ingeniería; Cirugía Vascular, Psiquiatría y Radioterapia, en Medicina; Matemáticas, Física y Ciencias Biológicas) han estado colaborando con nosotros. Estos nexos le dan un carácter multidisciplinario al centro, que es una de las principales características que queremos promover. Para reflejar estos cambios, el Centro de Investigación en Resonancia Magnética pasó a ser el actual Centro de Imágenes Biomédicas.[/lang_es]

[lang_en]With the participation of the Electrical Engineering and Radiology departments of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, the Center for Magnetic Resonance Imaging was created in 2000. Several funds from the university itself, the schools of engineering and medicine, the Chilean government (through FONDEF) and Philips Medical Systems, allowed the creation of this center. Originally, as its former name suggests, its research focus was Magnetic Resonance Imaging; however, with time, the incorporation of research in other medical imaging modalities, such as X-rays, Nuclear Medicine, Optical Microscopy, among others, appeared convenient. Additionally, throughout these years, we have also explored other areas such as image analysis and image perception and, at the same time, researchers from other fields (Computer Science, Mechanics, Mathematics, Physics, Psychiatry, Radiotherapy and Biology) have been collaborating with us. This collaboration has built up a multidisciplinary team expanding our research focus. Accordingly with this, our name has now been changed to Biomedical Imaging Center. [/lang_en]
